Sebastian and I are sitting on the creaky old couch across from Tony Martins, the immigration lawyer. Tony is wearing the most garish yellow suit I’ve ever seen, and his tiny office smells like cigarette smoke. If it wasn’t for the framed certificates on the walls, I’d never believe this guy was a lawyer.

He’s almost bald on top, with a few wispy hairs combed over. I’m not sure who he’s trying to convince. The one feature I can’t get over is his bulbous nose and the large pimple on his left nostril.

The more I tell myself to look away, the harder I stare.

“The USCIS have received your application, and everything appears to be in order,” Tony says, lacing his stubby fingers together. “I see you haven’t attended your medical exam, yet?” He gives Sebastian a reproachful look. There’s a bulge in Sebastian’s jaw as he stares back.

“I have an appointment next week,” he says curtly.

He’s lying. The way his fingers tense is a tell. Plus, I know his schedule better than he does and there’s nothing about a medical appointment for the next thirty days.

I make a mental note to remind him to book one.

“As long as you have your medical forms with you for the green card interview, that’s fine,” Tony adds. He coughs into his fist for several moments. Sebastian and I exchange looks.

There’s a film of sweat on Sebastian’s brow. Good grief, he’s bad at this. At the rate we’re going, he’s going to crack under pressure during the interview and the office will discover this marriage is a sham.

Then what? I’ll go to prison.

I take his hand. “So, how long will it take to get to the interview stage?” I ask.

Tony looks at Sebastian first, then clears his throat before he looks back at me.

“It’s hard to say. There can be a number of delays. These things aren’t quick.”

This prompts Sebastian to start nodding. “We understand. Now, do you need to take my photo?” he asks, sitting more upright. It’s nice to see that he doesn’t flinch under my touch, but he won’t look me in the eye. I guess he’s still hurt by the way I took his apology.

Tony nods like a dog. “Yes, yes. Fingerprints and photos, yes.” He turns to me, “Mrs. Rockwood, would you mind stepping out for a few moments?”

I hesitate and look at Sebastian, who finally looks at me. He gives me a nod. “I’ll be right out.”

“Erm... Sure, I’ll be in the hall.” I get up and leave the room, then I lean in to hear the muffled voices.

I can’t make out the words, but Sebastian’s voice is irritated. The two men engage in some sort of heated discussion for several minutes.

My brain is working overtime to figure out why something feels off.

I can’t understand why Sebastian would be annoyed with the immigration lawyer. He hired him to help us. Getting a green card is what he wants, isn’t it?

That feeling I had from the start comes back to me.
